Interlibrary Loan Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located?
The ILL office is located in the Library in RT 324, on the 3rd floor (see floor plan). Our hours are Mon. - Fri. from 8 am to 5 pm. We are closed weekends. You can call the ILL office at (216) 687-2445 or email us at
What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan borrows materials and obtains photocopies of journal articles not held in the CSU Library collection. In certain special circumstances, such as when a CSU-owned book is checked out or declared lost or missing, or when CSU's copy of a journal is at the bindery, items that are owned by CSU can be obtained through ILL.
Who can use Interlibrary Loan?
Faculty, staff, and students currently registered at CSU can use Interlibrary Loan.
What kinds of materials can I get through Interlibrary Loan?
Books, dissertations, theses, conference proceedings, technical papers and journal articles are the most commonly requested items.
Are there any materials that I can't request?
Entire issues or volumes of journals, reference works, and a-v materials such as videotapes or audio cassettes are not available through Interlibrary Loan.
How do I request materials?
Requests can be made using ILLiad. Once you have created a user profile in ILLiad, you can type in your username and password to access the suite of forms available to request materials. You can also track the progress of your requests in ILLiad, add information to a request as necessary, or cancel a request if you decide you no longer need the material. Log on now.
How long will it take to process my request?
The average turnaround time is 7-10 days. This time may be shorter or longer depending upon the type of material requested and whether or not there are local libraries that own it. You are encouraged to submit requests as far ahead of your deadline as possible to allow for the maximum number of libraries to be contacted.
How much does it cost to request materials?
There is no charge for standard interlibrary loan requests.
How will I know when my materials have arrived?
You will be notified by phone or email based upon the preference you select when creating your ILLiad user profile. You may also check on the status of your requests at any time by logging onto ILLiad. Books will be held on the Interlibrary Loan shelves at the Circulation desk until the due date given by the lending institution. Articles not delivered electronically will be held at the Circulation desk for pickup, or sent via Campus Mail to department offices for faculty and graduate students with a departmental mailbox.
How long can I keep materials obtained through ILL?
Most books have a loan period of 2 to 4 weeks. Many books can also be renewed once. Photocopied materials are generally yours to keep.
Can I renew books obtained through Interlibrary Loan?
Most, but not all books can be renewed once. Those books that cannot be renewed will usually be marked with that information.
What are the fines for overdue materials?
Fines for overdue InterLibrary Loan (ILL) items are $.50 per day. Items 30 days or more overdue will be billed a replacement fee of $125.00. When the item is returned, the fee will be reduced to $50.00.
Why do some things come so quickly while others seem to take forever?
While every effort is made to locate your request locally, it is sometimes necessary to request items from lending institutions in other cities and even other states. Items not available locally or which are popular, such as books on computer software programs, will generally take longer to obtain.
What is the difference between Interlibrary Loan and OhioLINK?

The key difference between Interlibrary Loan and OhioLINK is the ability of the patron to request a book directly from the OhioLINK central catalog using Patron-Initiated Circulation (P-Circ). These books are held at the Circulation desk for pickup. Journal articles are not currently available for direct request through OhioLINK.

Please check the OhioLINK central catalog for books available via P-Circ before submitting your request to Interlibrary Loan.

What is Document Delivery Plus?
Document Delivery Plus is a service available to registered faculty and staff that allows Interlibrary Loan staff to charge out CSU books on the faculty member's record or photocopy journal articles and charge the department photocopy account. Materials are delivered to the department. Books requested through OhioLINK are also checked out and delivered to the department. Register for DD+ Service.
